Sunday, May 3

Science Fair Experiment day! Lacey has typed up all the sections of her science project and only has the actual final drops to do and record. Today was the day. Brian, Lacey, and Maren all went next door to the C Block building to drop her various egg protection methods down the stairwell, from increasing heights until the egg broke in each type. (Their stairwell has a wider opening for the drop than ours does.) One of the protection types lasted up until 5 floors before it broke! Maren was a great assistant, coming back over to our building to get forgotten supplies and replenish the egg stash. Lacey wrote up her observations and results to bring in to show her teacher on Monday.
Saturday, May 2

Lacey and I went to Armada for the afternoon to give the girls a break from each other and to replenish the collection of Roald Dahl books for Lacey to enjoy. We found a great History of World comic strip book, too, and enjoyed it over Frappucino and Brownie Cheesecake at Starbucks before finishing up our shopping. We were all surprised that the Ottoman Empire is not even mentioned in the book! But it has sparked some online searches to find out more on a few topics, and has introduced some interesting discussion topics as well (like Lacey's observation that there sure are a lot of wars and fights in history).

And my photography study continues twisting knobs on my camera until things look right. These boxes of dishwasher detergent tablets made us laugh. Notice one has 30% more and one has 35% more, but the box is so much bigger. The photo was taken on the floor of our entryway, with almost no light (the sun was going down and there's no direct light for that area of the apartment) so I put my camera to the test.

Ahh, nearly perfect

Happy Birthday Cassidy!

The jam turned out perfectly and was mighty tasty on French Toast this morning made with Trabzon Ekmek and Brian's yummy addition of grated orange peel in the batter. Too bad there's a space limit in my stomach, I could've kept eating for a long time it tasted so good.

We walked to Balgat today to get supplies for Lacey's science fair project display board and a big duffle bag for the trip home (Rob took one of our bags of stuff home already!). It is the route my dolmus goes to come home from school, so I'm pretty familiar with the sites, but still it was different to walk it. Things seemed closer by foot than by the seemingly long ride home each afternoon.

After McDonald's for lunch (yes, again) we finished the walk home and played around the house this afternoon. I tried a new zucchini and pasta recipe for dinner, which all 3 of the kids rejected fully. Oh well.

It has gotten too easy for me to hop in a cab and do things. Like run up to Oasis to bring Lacey a DVD she forgot to bring to her friend, and run over to Migros for pectin. I used to walk. Hmm.

Brian spotted some tasty looking strawberries at a stall near the dolmus stop at Guven Park today and bought some--he's trying to make some homemade jam for our fridge right now. We'll see how it goes...

Brian met Aeden and me at school today and we bussed to Kizilay for lunch at the "hole in the wall" Gozleme place Paul and Becky love. It was good, and now I've eaten in a place I wouldn't normally have ventured into (I'm not real adventurous when it comes to gastrointestinal experiments). Yay me!
Wednesday, April 29

Learned today that Oasis is now closed on Friday too. Is it really that difficult to sort out National holidays and give advance notice that schools will be closed?

One of the teachers at my school today was making up examples for the kids as they were reading simple words from the whiteboard. Sit: "The children sit on the floor" Sat: "The teacher is sat on the chair." I barely stopped myself from blurting out, "What?!" I've never known "is sat" to be proper in any form of English...

I got a special assignment to write out yearbook pages for the kids in my class since I have nice handwriting. Woo hoo! Except the comments from the teacher on the page say they're from Ms. Jo and Ms. Olga and Ms. Courtney. Hmm.

Tuesday, April 28

Made plans this morning for Mikah and Annie to come over for a play date after school today. Mikah leaves for a visit home to North Carolina on Friday, so it was now or never! They had a great time.

The preschool will now be closed on Friday, too. Looks like an unexpected 3-day weekend again! Too bad we didn't make any plans to make good use of it...
Monday, April 27

My muscles and joints ache as if I have actually walked up and down hills or done some kind of exercise, but I haven't. No congestion or cough though. Weird.

A shot from Brian's trip on the dolmus today:
